Level:_____lower-intermediate 2_____ Date/Time:_____3/23/2020_____

Objectives (SWBAT):

Students Will Be Able To…

1. learn two types of prepositions and their differences

2. use proper prepositions to give directions in speaking

Materials & Technology:

  • Textbook: Life 3 Unit 7 pp. 82-83

  • Other materials:

Activity 1: Grammar - Prepositions 1.1 Pre-Stage: Interaction: T-Ss

  • "Let's first take a look at one sentence from the email. Look at the highlighted words in this sentence. Which describes the location or place of an object or person? Which describes the direction of movement?"

  • Tell Ss that there are two types of prepositions we'll learn in this unit: prepositions of place and prepositions of movement.

  • Give some examples of each type.

1.2. During Stage: Interaction: T-Ss, S-S

  • "First, let's learn about prepositions of place. We usually use them to describe where people and things are. Here I have some common prepositions of place. I also have some pictures indicating specific prepositions. I want you to work in groups and match them together."

  • Open and explain the google doc first. "Group 1 needs to finish the first line..." "I'll now send the link of the google doc in the chat box. Then, I will put you guys into breakout rooms so you'll be able to talk with your partner while you complete this task. Every group needs to finish one line and I'll send instructions in the chat box after you are in different breakout rooms."

  • Ask Ss to come back to the main session, share the screen and talk about the group work together.

  • "Next, let's take a look at prepositions of movement. We use them to talk about the direction in which someone or something moves. What are some common prepositions of movement? What are some verbs of movement? Let's discuss them together" Gather everyone's answers and put them in the google doc.

1.3 Post-Stage: Interaction:T-Ss

  • "The meaning of some prepositions is fairly clear whereas others are less obvious. Let's compare them and talk about their differences."

  • Compare “on, above, and over”

  • Compare “below and after”

Transition to #2 "After learning these prepositions, let's see if you could apply them in real-life settings."

Activity 2: Speaking - Giving directions

2.1 Pre-Stage: Interaction: S-S, S-Ss

  • "Beichen just led us to read two emails containing some instructions. We'll try to write our own using proper prepositions to give instructions. I've already provided you with the outline of the email. What you need to do is to complete the emails with given prepositions."

  • "I'll send you the file of these emails and you need to download the document and finish it in groups. I'll put you into different breakout rooms so you could work on it together and compare the answers with your parteners."

  • Elicit the answers with the class.

2.2. During Stage: Interaction: S-S, T-Ss

  • "Now, we'll do a speaking activity practicing our ability to give directions on the street. Here is a map and you need to take turns to give directions in pairs. You could follow these three steps. First, describe where you are. Then, give directions to your partner. Finally, ask where am I now and your partner needs to give an answer."

  • "For example: I am at the corner of prince's road and queen's avenue. The bus station is on my right. I walk straight down Queen's Avenue and turn left at Oxford street. I keep going straight and go past the cinema. The place is now on my right. It is also next to the bank. Where am I now?"

  • Put students in separate breakout rooms and let them practice.

2.3 Post-Stage: Interaction: S-Ss

  • Invite Ss to make a conversation in front of the whole class

Transition to Wrap-Up: "This is the first grammar point we need to focus on in this unit. We'll have some homework and more practice on prepositions. But, we need to pause here a little bit because we’ll have our second unit test on Wednesday."

Wrap-up - About the second unit test

  • "I mentioned in the email that we will use google form to process our online unit test. Please make sure you all have a google account so that will be easier for all of us. The format of the test will be pretty much the same as the first unit test we took in the classroom. Please review the content these days and we'll also spend 10 or 20 minutes to do a short review before the test begins. Prepare any questions if you have. Also, for the speaking test, I'll invite you to a breakout room and do our test there."

Anticipated Problems & Suggested Solutions:

  • If they couldn’t receive the file of the emails in Zoom, I could copy and paste it on the google document for students to use.

Contingency Plans:

  • If I finish early, I will show them how to sign up for a google account and ask everyone to finish this in the class to make sure the test will be processed smoothly on Wednesday.

  • If some activities take longer than I expected because of online issues, I will make the last speaking activity as homework and let them prepare at home first. Then, we could do this in our next class.

Post-Lesson Reflections:

  • I could give more delayed corrective feedback for students and also use different types of CF such as recast and so on. I should also get more prepared that one student could only use a cell phone to take the class and provide more options to her.
